“Without pain, there can be no pleasure. Without sadness, there can be no happiness. Without misery there can be no beauty. And without all of these, life is meaningless.” Harlan Ellison
I was drawn to this question because I can strongly relate. Like many people in this world, there have been many scenarios in my life that have led me to answer this question with a firm no.
You can never truly experience happiness until you have felt sadness; once you have felt what it’s like to have nothing, to lose something you’ve cherished or the lose of a loved one. After that sadness, is when you can begin to grow and truly value happiness.
To finally say “I’m happy”, now that is a statement many of us struggle to say truthfully. It is hard to find something or even someone to make us feel whole again, to make us feel like we’re going to be okay.
It is important to understand the value of both feelings. Both opposites, but tie together so well that without each other you will never really understand the meaning of both.
Do you guys think there can be happiness without sadness?
